Images in watercolour and acrylic
I live and work in West Cornwall, UK, overlooking Mounts Bay and the Western Approaches to the English Channel.
I paint in watercolour and acrylic and have an interest in photography as a supporting medium.
Brought up in the Fens of East Anglia I was strongly influenced by giant skies, the soft atmospheric effect of mists over water and the clear light. Inevitably I used watercolour as a medium to represent the beauty of the landscape, architecture and wildlife. The stronger light in Cornwall tends to favour more opaque media and acrylic paint can fulfil this role.
My interests are eclectic and this is reflected in the wide range of subjects I enjoy painting. These include landscapes, harbour scenes, atmospheric seascapes, details of buildings and studies of wildlife in the environment.
My artistic endeavours reflect an academic background and interest in the Natural Sciences. I followed research interests in geological and marine science. During a career in education I also studied ecology and conservation. Volunteering with the National Trust, the Cornwall Wildlife Trust and at sea with the RSPB are experiences that all have a significant influence on the choice of images that appear in my paintings.
